Courts exist because disputes need somewhere to go once the people involved can't resolve them on their own. Without that neutral place, disagreements would get settled by whoever had more power, more money, or more willingness to escalate — exactly the outcome a fair society is supposed to prevent.

That's the actual purpose underneath the process. A courtroom isn't there to punish for its own sake or to satisfy anger. It's there to apply agreed-upon rules to a specific dispute, decided by someone with no stake in the outcome, so the result depends on facts and law instead of who's louder or more intimidating.

This matters because it changes what court is actually for. It's not a place to go seeking revenge, and cases framed that way tend to go poorly. It's a place to bring a legitimate dispute, supported by real evidence, and let a neutral process decide it fairly.

Justice, in this sense, isn't about winning at any cost. It's about having somewhere real to go when a dispute genuinely needs resolving, and knowing that somewhere applies the same rules to everyone who walks through the door, regardless of who they are.
