Your phone rings. Unknown number. You answer, and someone starts talking fast about an old debt, a balance, a deadline.
Here's what they don't lead with: that debt was probably sold. Sometimes more than once. Original creditors write off unpaid accounts and sell them in bulk to collection agencies for cents on the dollar.
That means the person calling you isn't the bank. They're not the credit card company. They're a third party who bought your file cheap, betting you'll pay in full out of fear.
That doesn't make the debt fake. But it does mean you have rights they're counting on you not knowing. They have to prove they actually own the debt. They have to follow rules about when and how they can contact you. And plenty of old debts pass a legal expiration date where they can still ask, but can't force collection through court.
Fear is their whole business model. Confusion is the product they're selling you.
You don't have to be rude. You don't have to hide. You just have to know what you're actually dealing with before you hand over a payment.
